How to Navigate with or Without a Compass

A compass doesn't tell you where you are going, but it does help you find your way back home if you lose your bearings.

Three different ways you can navigate are available:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using the compass)
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. These include trees, buildings and rivers. Landmarks are useful because they provide a visual clue to where you are.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. If you look at the sky, the sun appears like it's moving across the sky. However, the earth's magnet field causes the sun to move about the earth. So, while the sun seems to move across the sky, it really moves around the horizon. The sun is directly overhead at noon. The sun is directly below your eyes at midnight. Because the earth's magnetic field changes constantly, the exact direction of its magnetic North pole is always changing. This means that your course could drift a lot in a single day.

Another way to navigate is with stars. Stars appear over the horizon to rise and lower. These are fixed points in space that you can use to determine your location relative to other locations.

You will do well in almost any situation if you have patience and calm. In a survival situation, it is easy to panic, especially if your only option is to stay put and not be contacted by anyone. Keep calm and be patient, you will be able to handle whatever happens.

It's important to remember that you cannot change the outcome of a situation. Only you have control over how you respond. In this way, you can still feel good about yourself even though you didn't accomplish everything you wanted to.

When you are in a survival situation, you must remain calm and collected. This includes being mentally and physically ready.

How To

How to Build Shelters from Natural Materials for Emergencies

Shelter building is one of the most important skills needed during emergency situations. There are two types of shelter: temporary (tent) and permanent (house). Both shelters will require basic tools such saws, hammers (saws), axes and shovels. However they may differ in what type of material is used. Temporary shelters are typically made from sticks and leaves, as well as grasses and concrete. Permanent shelters, on the other hand, can be constructed of wood, metal or brick. The situation, climate, available resources and the best option will all determine which one is best.

Natural materials such bamboo, reeds palm fronds bark, bark, grasses branches, twigs and vines are all available. They have been used for centuries as temporary shelters. They are light and simple to make, but not durable. These structures provide protection from insects and extreme weather conditions. Permanent structures have stronger insulation properties and last longer. It is also more difficult to build.

These shelters must not only be practical but also look great and cost-effective. Bamboo is a great choice due to its strength and lightness. However, it is difficult to work with and can be costly. Reeds are very cheap but do not hold up well under heavy winds. Palm fronds are strong but easily torn and fragile. Bark is difficult to work, but provides excellent insulation and fire resistance. Grasses, while inexpensive, do not keep rainwater out. Vines can be lightweight and flexible, but they could break if too tightly tethered together. Although branches are strong and resilient, they can easily rot. Stone is durable and water-resistant, but it can be heavy and expensive. Concrete is hardy but not easy to transport or install. Brick is durable but heavy and requires a lot of space. Wood lasts long but needs maintenance and care. Metal is difficult to use and expensive.

The location of the construction site and the availability of local tools, regulations and climatic conditions will all influence the choice of material. Bamboo is most popular in tropical places where it grows naturally. It can grow quickly, is low-cost, and doesn’t require special tools. However, it is weak when wet and cannot withstand strong wind. It is tough and durable, but it takes a lot of effort to erect. Palms are tough and resilient but get dirty quickly. The bark is cheap, light, and easy to cut. It resists moisture and dust but is susceptible to cracking and breaking. Stones are strong and durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions. Concrete is durable and versatile but is heavy and requires power tools. Metal is strong and requires many power tools. Wood is durable and relatively inexpensive. Steel is also durable but more costly.
